President's Message-Spring 2008
Don Borkowski
Happy Spring 2008! Much of the focus of current news in the United States concerns the excitement of the upcoming presidential race. But now is the time to address some world issues from an astrological perspective. The time is right to look at China and the situation in Tibet.
Many members of the American metaphysical community have long looked at Tibet as an idyllic, spiritual place that is far removed from the harsh realities of the world. Unfortunately, those harsh realities are the unpleasant truth, as far as Tibet is concerned. Currently, there is a great deal of unrest in Tibet. The Tibetan people are totally exasperated by their oppression by China, but from the perspective of China, Tibet is a renegade province that needs to be kept in its place.
Both Tibet and China have existed for thousands of years, but not in their present form. As astrologers, we are fortunate to have a functioning, timed chart for the current Communist regime in China. To forecast events in China, the chart for October 1, 1949 at 3:15 p.m., China Coast Time in Beijing works exceedingly well. That chart has the Sun at 7:47 Libra, the Moon at 3:10 Aquarius and 5:57 Aquarius rising. With the Libra stellium of Sun, Mercury and Neptune both intercepted and hidden away in the 8th house.
Although many of us consider Tibet to be a land unto itself, as far as the Chinese government is concerned, it remains a province of China. In fact, even most astrological software echoes the official position, and the Tibetan capital of Lhasa is listed as being in China. Noted Canadian astrologer, Blain Bovee, has studied Tibet extensively and offers the chart of a 1959 uprising as holding the most effectiveness for predicting Tibetan activity. That chart, drawn for March 10, 1959 at 7:00 a.m. Russian Time Zone 5 has the Sun at 18:43 Pisces conjunct the Moon at 25:26 Pisces, intercepted in the 12th house, with 4:30 Aries rising. Both charts show peoples who are both highly unknowable to the outside world and both motivated by high idealism.
Some coming trends for China, as shown by its solar arcs, show Saturn arcing to Neptune, a suggestion of being made to look bad. But the Ascendant is arcing to Uranus, and China wants to show off a bit and "strut its stuff" for this Summer's Olympics in Beijing.
Of course, this is just skimming the surface, but it's something to think about.
